I have written many times that one of the causes of DUI arrest is the result of alcohol affecting a person's judgment. No one intends to get a DUI, but for some people an arrest is shocking.
One cause may be the result of consuming “hard” versions of what would normally be soft drinks. Some examples of such beverages are:
- Mike's Hard Lemonade
- Raspberry Beer
- Adult Cream Soda
- Not Your Father's Root Beer
- Henry's Hard Soda (Orange, Ginger Ale, Grape, Cherry Cola)
I am not trying to say a person is not responsible if they become intoxicated on “hard” drinks. I am saying that psychologically these drinks may cause a false sense of security.
When I was in my twenties, wine coolers were the rage. They were heavily advertised on television, and on TV everyone looked like they were having a great time. The most famous brand was Bartles and Jaymes.
Since wine coolers are sweet and fruit flavored, young (and sometimes underage) people were drawn to them. There were dozens of flavors.
The result was an increased number of alcohol-related fatalities, especially amongst young people. I will admit my first taste of an adult beverage was a wine cooler when I was under the age of 21.
My point is not to ban products. My point is that the modern-day version of wine coolers are the beverages listed above. It is important to remember that the alcohol content of these products is at least equivalent to having a 12-ounce beer, and in most circumstances, far more.
When people drink responsibly or have a designated driver, there is nothing for which to be concerned. However, always remember that alcohol impairs a person's judgment. Bear in mind that fact before drinking.
