A six year-old boy was struck by a car and critically injured Tuesday morning near Stone Mountain in DeKalb County. He is currently in critical condition at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.
Just before 7am the child was on the opposite side of the street from the crossing guard at Hambrick Road and Central Drive. The traffic on Hambrick had the green light and the crossing guard entered the intersection to stop traffic. The child started crossing the street too soon and was hit by a vehicle before the crossing guard had completely gotten in the road to stop traffic and signal for the children to cross.
No charges are expected at this time, and the driver remained at the scene of the accident.
As spring is here and it will soon be summer, motorists must watch out for children near or playing near roadways. Parents should keep an eye on their children outside and teach them to look both ways before crossing a street.
