Fulton County Detention Officer Accused of Smuggling Drugs into Jail

Posted by Richard Lawson | Nov 27, 2018 | 0 Comments

According to reports, detention officer, Adonis Lovejoy, was arrested for allegedly arranging drug deals in Fulton County Jail. Other jail employees have been watching Lovejoy closely for the past few months. He apparently has been captured on video with a container of different contraband items.

The FBI along with Georgia investigators have opened an investigation in Lovejoy. Right now, it is suspected that Lovejoy was not working alone.

After Lovejoy was detained, every floor of the jail in Fulton County was searched by drug dogs.

Lovejoy is facing the following charges: violation of oath, bribery, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, giving prohibited items to inmates, crossing the guard line as well as other drug possession charges.

As a Georgia DUI Lawyer, I will focus on one of the offenses currently faced by Lovejoy.

Crossing the Guard Line in Georgia

Crossing the Guard Line in Georgia is defined by Georgia Law as:

“It shall be unlawful for any person to come inside the guard lines established at any state or county correctional institution with a gun, pistol, or any other weapon or with or under the influence of any intoxicating liquor, amphetamines, biphetamines, or any other hallucinogenic or other drugs, without the knowledge or consent of the warden, superintendent, or his designated representative.”

Crossing the Guard Line is a law designed to penalize anyone who tries to sneak contraband into a jail or prison.

If convicted of the criminal offense of Crossing the Guard Line, an individual will be a convicted felon. The penalty can include up to four years in prison.

Practice Note

The question for our purposes is how does this relate to DUI in Georgia. Well, as a Georgia DUI Attorney, let me give you a quick example. Let's say that a driver is arrested for DUI Drugs in Georgia. It just so happens that there is less than an ounce of marijuana in his back pocket. As soon as the marijuana is discovered, he will be charged with crossing the guard line. Even if he had no intention to bring it into the jail.
