Georgia DUI News January 2018

January was a busy month for traffic-related events. With multiple snow days and heavy traffic with sporting events, there were many incidents to report about this month: 

On January 5th, 2018, Juan Cisneros Alvarez was killed when he was in an accident on I-85. Alvarez was driving northbound in the southbound lane and died at the scene. Thankfully, the other driver sustained minor injuries. 

A crash on I-75 resulted in the death of one person and another being critically injured on January 8th, 2018. The involved was a four-car crash on Interstate 75 near Mt. Zion Boulevard around 8:00 a.m. All northbound lanes were shut down for hours as police investigated the accident. 

Two teens were involved in a car accident June 19th of last year. The driver, Cameron Childers, was charged with vehicular homicide as a result when he drove down an embankment into a tree. The passenger, Mahlon Thorton, died from his injuries and Childer's toxicology report showed drugs in his system at the time of the crash. On January 9th, Childers was indicted for the DUI crash that killed Thornton. He is facing First Degree Vehicular Homicide, as a result of his alleged impairment. 

A pedestrian was killed on January 12th, 2018 near Buford Drive in Gwinnett County. The deceased was walking along Interstate 985 when he was hit and killed. 

A famous record producer and label co-owner is facing charges from allegedly speeding on January 21st, 2018. Pierre “Pee” Thomas was driving a red SUV up Ga. 400 when an officer clocked him going 125 mph, accelerating away from a chasing police officer. Thomas eventually pulled over, and the officer questioned him about his speed. The officer arrested Thomas, and he was charged with reckless driving

On January 23rd, 2018, all lanes of Interstate 20 were blocked after a deadly crash that morning. There was a three-car crash that resulted in the death of Demetrius Cotton of Atlanta. Six other people were taken to the hospital. Police recovered a large bag of marijuana and two guns from the crash site. 

On January 28th, 2018, Lieutenant Chad Smith of the Rockdale County Fire Rescue died while off duty. He was in a single car accident on Highway 138 in Conyers that resulted in his death. He had been with the station for 15 and a half years and will be deeply missed. 

A Haralson County Deputy has been hurt after a car chase ended in a crash on January 29th, 2018. Bremen police were asked to be on the lookout for a suspicious Hyundai. When the Haralson County Sheriff's Deputies spotted the car, they tried to pull it over but the driver sped on, and a chase ensued. The driver has been charged with DUI Drugs, and both the driver and passenger are in intensive care. 

Early Wednesday, January 31st, 2018, a drunk driver crashed his pickup truck into a fire hydrant, street sign, and power pole in Buckhead. 300 people lost power due to the accident. The 22-year-old driver has been charged with driving under the influence. Luckily, no injuries were reported from the incident.
