Ricky B. Awtrey of Douglasville Georgia was sentenced to 120 years today as part of the stupid war on drugs. He was convicted of selling synthetic marijuana.
Really? 120 years? He is 54 years old and will serve the rest of his life in prison. What is the purpose of that?
He had a prior trafficking case on his record, and I am certain that was a factor, but what is the purpose of this sentence? Whom does it serve to have this man die in prison?
This is the same county whose former District Attorney, David McDade, was able to make a deal not be prosecuted or investigated for irregularities while in office. As I predicted a week ago, there was no mercy for the next person charged criminally.
So, the little guy gets 120 years in prison, while people like McDade get to make a deal to pay $4000 in restitution and not be prosecuted or investigated. Also, McDade's handpicked successor is now the District Attorney prosecuting the little guy, taking over right where McDade left off.
I have no idea how these prosecutors and judges live with themselves. I am disgusted.

This one is just stupid. 120 years? I don’t know the details of the case, but unless some people died, this is just ridiculous.

This is a message to lawyers to not have trials. It’s 120 years “rent” for the courtroom time.
