Scraping My Wheels Because I Was Distracted By My Phone

Posted by Richard Lawson | Aug 18, 2014 | 0 Comments

Today, I went to answer a phone call using the built-in Bluetooth in my car and proceeded to scrap both passenger side tires quite significantly.

I am posting this as a confession that I was a distracted driver in the hopes that I refrain from such behavior in the future.  Interestingly, I did not pick up the phone, look at the screen, or take my eyes off the road.

Nevertheless, I still scraped the car and will need two new wheels, with a cost of around $600.00 plus labor.  This a small cost for being an idiot.  Dave Ramsey calls it "stupid tax."  I consider it an important reminder because even "hands-free" calling can be a distraction.

I can certainly see why texting and driving would cause even more risk.  It has been reported that a person is 23 times more likely to be in an accident if they are texting.  I was merely distracted and startled by the phone (for whatever reason) and still managed to momentarily lose control of the vehicle.

I am not looking for absolution from my confession.  I just hope everyone has a safe day tomorrow and considers how they can improve their driving habits.  I hope I have learned my lesson.
