What I Learned From an 83-Year-old Man Today

As an attorney, I spend most of my day speaking to strangers.  Today, in between court hearings I met a Billy Moss, who has been repairing shoes in Canton, Georgia since 1955. 

I have learned in my career that I should never miss an opportunity to learn something from someone.  As he was shining my shoes, I asked him what is his secret to continuing to work and being healthy at 83 years old?

He didn't hesitate to answer.  He told me that he, "didn't smoke, didn't drink, and didn't drink coffee."  He also said that "he had never missed a day of work except when he had cataract surgery.

He was not trying to preach.  He has owned the same business for 62 years, and his point is to love coming to work and to run an honest business.  He appeared happier than most people I meet.  

He has a new customer for life, and I hope that means a very long time.  Nice to meet you, Billy Moss.
