What is DUI School in Georgia?

Posted by Richard Lawson | Apr 11, 2018 | 0 Comments

DUI School is required in all DUI cases in Georgia.

If the outcome of a case is a DUI conviction, Georgia judges order people to complete certain requirements, which includes DUI School in Georgia.

Georgia DUI Penalties are serious and can be life-altering. Hiring a Georgia DUI Lawyer is extremely important if you want to avoid penalties.

What is DUI School?

DUI School stands for DUI, Alcohol or Drug Use Risk Reduction Program. It's an intervention program mandated for those convicted of DUI, drug possession, underage possession of alcohol, or BUI.

What is it comprised of?

There are two main components to DUI School that need to be done in order to get a certificate of completion.

1. The assessment component. This component is a comprehensive screening test consisting of 130 questions. The questions will be used to evaluate the extent of a person's drug and alcohol use.

2. The intervention component. This component is a 20 hour course. The course itself involves group sessions and counseling about the effects drugs and alcohol have on driving a vehicle.

How long will it take?

DUI School can usually be taken care of in less than one week. It's not offered online and has very strict policies around attendance and timeliness. DUI School is commonly a Friday evening and a full Saturday and Sunday. It can also be offered on a full Saturday, Sunday and Monday evening.

How much does it cost?

The total cost of DUI School is $355.00. DUI Schools in Georgia are not allowed to charge more than what is mandated by the state of Georgia. If a school is attempting to charge you more for the program, you should report them to local authorities.

Can I go to any DUI School?

Only DUI Schools that are approved by the Georgia Department of Human Resources and the Department of Driver Services will count. In fact, there is a list of approved DUI schools in Georgia that you can reference. These are the only programs that will actually be accepted by the Department of Driver Services when you go to reinstate your driver's license.

As I mentioned earlier in this post, DUI School is mandatory in all Georgia DUI cases. Our office actually advises all of our clients to attend DUI School before going to court for their DUI case. No lawyer can guarantee the outcome of any litigation, therefore we find it important that our clients are well-educated and can reinstate their licenses - win or lose.
